21-24 Les effets de l'inondation

21 -23. Le même résultat tragique est énoncé deux fois : au verset 21, d'après le récit élohiste, aux versets 22-23, d'après le récit jéhoviste (du moins si l'on tient compte des caractères du style).

Tous les hommes, femmes et enfants de ce monde, moururent, à l'exception de ceux qui se trouvaient dans l'arche. Nous pouvons imaginer facilement la terreur qui les saisit. Notre Sauveur nous dit que jusqu'à ce que le déluge arrive, les hommes mangeaient et buvaient, Luc 17:26,27 ; ils étaient aveugles et sourds aux avertissements divins. La mort les a alors surpris. Ils ont été convaincus trop tard de leur folie. On peut supposer qu'ils ont essayé de s'en sortir par tous les moyens, mais tout a été vain. Ceux qui n'appartiennent pas à Christ, l'Arche, sont perdus, perdus à jamais. Faisons une pause, un instant, pour considérer ce jugement terrible ! Qui peut se tenir devant l'Éternel alors qu'Il est en colère ? L'iniquité du pécheur sera tôt ou tard sa ruine, à moins qu'il ne se repente. Le Dieu de justice sait comment faire venir la ruine sur ce monde impie, 2Pierre 2:5.

Quel moment terrible ce sera pour les incrédules, au jour du Jugement ! Heureux ceux qui appartiennent à la famille de Christ, ils se trouvent vraiment en sécurité ; ils peuvent, sans crainte, porter leur regard vers le futur et voir qu'ils seront épargnés, au grand jour du triomphe divin, quand le feu s'abattra sur la terre et sur tout ce qu'elle contient. Nous sommes capables, dans notre vie, d'emprunter divers chemins ; si nous négligeons, refusons ou méprisons le salut de Christ, nous serons détruits lors de la ruine commune qui s'abattra sur le monde incrédule.
