Grec : moi, je suis le berger, le bon.

Jésus ne dit pas : un berger, comme au verset 2, et comme Luther traduit à tort ; mais le berger, dans un sens absolu et exclusif. Puis l'adjectif signifie à la fois bon et beau,

"il désigne chez les Grecs la bonté comme suprême beauté morale. Ce mot explique l'article le : Celui qui réalise parfaitement ce type sublime." Godet.

En parlant ainsi, Jésus présentait à ses auditeurs, comme pleinement réalisée en lui, une image qui leur était familière par les Ecritures. (Voir Psaumes 23.1,Psaumes 80.1 ; Esaïe 40.11 ; Ezéchiel 34.11-23)

Seulement, comme dans tous ces passages de l'Ancien Testament c'est l'Eternel lui même qui se représente sous l'image du berger, on voit que Jésus, en nous montrant en lui la pleine réalisation de cette image, parle avec la conscience d'être un avec Dieu.

- C'est ici la seconde application de la similitude. (verset 7, note, et verset 2, note.) Il n'y a point de contradiction à ce que Jésus se représente, à la fois, comme la porte et comme le berger. Il est la porte par laquelle seule les bergers et les brebis entrent dans le bercail du royaume de Dieu, et, dans ce royaume, il est le conducteur suprême des uns et des autres. Il est le Berger des bergers et le Berger des brebis.

Grec : met sa vie, littéralement son âme, pour ses brebis. Cette manière de parler est propre à notre évangéliste. (Jean 10.15,17,18 ; 13.37,38 ; 15.13 ; 1Jean 3.16)

L'expression : il met sa vie, signifie que le bon berger expose sa vie dans le combat, pour la défense de ses brebis, par opposition au mercenaire qui s'enfuit lâchement, (verset 12) elle annonce l'immense sacrifice par lequel Jésus livrera sa vie pour sauver les siens. (Jean 13.37)

Quelques exégètes pensent que ce terme figuré est emprunté à l'idée d'un vêtement qu'on dépose (Jean 13.4) ou à celle d'un dépôt d'argent, d'une rançon payée. (Matthieu 20.28)

Mais ces idées ne peuvent s'appliquer aux relations que le berger a soit avec ses brebis, soit avec le loup.
