De justice, parce que je m'en vais à mon Père, et que vous ne me verrez plus ;

En même temps que le Saint-Esprit convaincra le monde de péché, il le convaincra aussi de justice ; ces deux choses sont inséparables.

Mais cette justice divine a été manifestée au monde en Jésus-Christ et, tout particulièrement, en sa personne même, par son élévation dans la gloire. Bien qu'il fût le Saint et le Juste, il n'en fut pas moins méconnu du monde, accusé condamné, mis à mort comme un malfaiteur. En lui, et selon les apparences, l'iniquité triomphait de la justice.

Mais, par sa résurrection glorieuse et par son élévation à la droite de la majesté divine, il fut "déclaré Fils de Dieu avec puissance," (Romains 1.4) "justifié par l'Esprit," (1Timothée 3.16) "élevé à la droite de Dieu comme Prince et Sauveur." (Actes 5.30,31 comparez Jean 1.32,33 ; 3.15 ; 10.40)

C'est donc, avant tout, de la justice de Christ lui-même que le Saint-Esprit devait convaincre le monde, ainsi que l'indique clairement le Sauveur par ces mots : de justice, parce que, ou en ce que je m'en vais à mon Père. Celui qui mourut sur la croix reste donc éternellement le Juste. (1Jean 2.1 ; 3.7 ; 1Pierre 3.18)

- La justice dont l'Esprit convaincra le monde est donc la justice de Christ, qui lui est personnelle, ce mot ne saurait s'entendre ici dans le sens que l'apôtre Paul lui donne : la justice que le pécheur obtient par la foi en Christ. Augustin, Luther, Mélanchton, Calvin et d'autres l'expliquent ainsi à tort.

Mais, comme le reconnaissent de Wette, Luthardt et d'autres exégètes, cette explication, si elle ne donne pas le vrai sens du terme de justice, renferme une pensée qui n'est pas entièrement étrangère au contexte, car la justification de Christ a pour conséquence la justification de ceux qui se confient en lui comme en leur Sauveur.

- Jésus ajoute en s'adressant à ses disciples : et que vous ne me verrez plus. Cette parole est la confirmation de celle qui précède : je m'en vais à mon Père.

Si Jésus déclare à ses disciples directement qu'il va devenir invisible par son retour auprès du Père cette tournure personnelle qu'il donne à l'énoncé de sa pensée peut s'expliquer soit par l'intention de leur témoigner sa tendre sympathie pour la douleur que leur causera la séparation (Meyer, Luthardt), soit par le désir de les avertir qu'ils auront à se déshabituer de sa présence matérielle qu'ils devront apprendre à ne plus le voir selon la chair, mais à entrer, par le moyen du Saint-Esprit, dans une communion intime et vivante avec lui.

En les unissant dans cette communion, en constituant ainsi l'Eglise qui est le corps de Christ et sa représentante sur la terre, le Saint-Esprit convaincra le monde de la justice de Jésus Christ et démontrera à tous que Jésus est le Saint de Dieu, le Sauveur des hommes, la source du salut et de la vie éternelle.
