Avec le verset 24, la prière de Jésus pour son Eglise avait atteint le plus haut degré de sublimité, il ne pouvait rien demander de plus pour elle que la participation à sa gloire éternelle.

C'est pourquoi, jetant un regard en arrière, il revient, en finissant, à ses disciples, à leurs rapports avec Dieu, par opposition au monde, (versets 6-8) et, faisant un appel à la justice divine, il attend d'elle l'exaucement de sa prière pour les siens.

Père juste ! dit-il avec un profond sentiment de cette perfection de Dieu, il est vrai que le monde reste volontairement dans l'ignorance et les ténèbres alors qu'il aurait pu te connaître ; (Jean 7.28 ; 16.3) mais il n'en est pas ainsi de tous ; car moi, je t'ai connu par la communion intime où je vis avec toi, (Jean 8.55) et, par moi, ceux ci t'ont connu et ils savent que je suis ton Envoyé, (verset 8) ton représentant au milieu d'eux.

C'est donc à ta justice, à ta fidélité que j'en appelle, pour que, en exauçant ma prière, tu achèves ton œuvre en eux.
