Un éphod. On a parfois, en raison de ce qui suit (tout Israël se prostitua), donné à ce mot le sens de statue ou d'idole. Mais jamais ce terme n'a un pareil sens ; il désigne toujours un vêtement sacerdotal ; ainsi dans le costume officiel du grand sacrificateur (Exode 28.6-10, note). La grande quantité d'or employée doit faire supposer que Gédéon fit son éphod entièrement d'or, ce qui lui donnait un éclat bien supérieur à celui de Silo. Peut-être un pectoral et un moyen de consulter Dieu étaient-ils joints aussi à l'éphod de Gédéon.

Il le plaça dans sa ville. Le mot placer, ne signifie point dresser, comme s'il s'agissait d'une idole, mais simplement mettre (comparez 6.37 : Gédéon mit la toison dans l'aire, où est employé le même mot). Cet objet remarquable, placé dans un lieu public, attirait le peuple qui venait en ce lieu, consacré par l'apparition de l'ange de l'Eternel et par l'autel qui y avait été élevé, consulter Dieu et rendre un culte quelconque. Nous ignorons si c'était Gédéon lui-même ou un sacrificateur appelé par lui qui se revêtait de cet éphod magnifique pour officier. En tout cas c'était un sanctuaire rival, qui détournait le peuple du sanctuaire légitime. Ce fut un prélude de la séparation religieuse qui se renouvela plus tard depuis Jéroboam sur une plus grande échelle. L'auteur appelle ce culte une prostitution. Ce terme désigne ordinairement l'idolâtrie proprement dite. Mais Gédéon était, d'après le récit tout entier, un fidèle serviteur de l'Eternel et il est dit expressément (verset 33) que l'adoration d'autres divinités que l'Eternel ne cornmença qu'après sa mort. Le péché consista donc dans l'établissement d'un sanctuaire rival de celui de Silo ; ce culte séparatiste dégénéra bientôt en un culte idolâtre.

Pour Gédéon et pour sa maison : les malheurs de sa famille, racontés au chapitre 9, furent l'effet et le châtiment de cette position illégale qu'il avait prise.
