C'est sous cette forme abrégée que Luc l'a rapportée. Le texte reçu, qui la renferme tout entière, a été complété d'après Matthieu.

La formule de Luc présente, en outre, quelques expressions qui diffèrent du texte de Matthieu. Ainsi : "Donne-nous chaque jour, au lieu de aujourd'hui, notre pain quotidien." Le terme de Luc peut s'étendre à l'avenir, tandis que celui de Matthieu limite la demande au jour présent.

- Luc dit : "Remets-nous nos péchés," au lieu de nos dettes, terme qui, même dans Matthieu, ne peut naturellement s'entendre que des péchés dont nous demandons le pardon ; mais Luc conserve la même image dans ces mots : à quiconque nous doit.

Matthieu motive cette demande de pardon en disant : comme nous remettons, Luc : car nous remettons. Il ne veut pas dire qu'en pardonnant aux autres nous méritions le pardon de Dieu.

La tournure employée suppose, suivant M. Godet, un raisonnement semblable à celui que nous trouvons au verset 13 "Si vous qui êtes mauvais,...combien plus le Père céleste..." De même ici : "Pardonne-nous nos péchés, toi la Miséricorde suprême, puisque nous aussi, tout mauvais que nous sommes, nous pardonnons."

L'expression absolue : à quiconque nous doit, ne s'accorde pas bien avec cette explication. Elle montre que le motif ajouté à la requête est un vœu, une résolution prise pour l'avenir, et par laquelle celui qui prie manifeste des dispositions qui le rendent propre à recevoir le pardon de Dieu.

La formule de Luc a ainsi le même sens que celle de Matthieu. (Matthieu 6.12, note.)
