World English Bible It happened that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried.

Dans le sein d Abraham ; le sens de l'expression dans le sein, est le même que dans Jean 13.23.

Le Sauveur représente ici, comme souvent ailleurs, (Matthieu 8.11 ; 26.29 ; Luc 13.28) le bonheur du ciel sous l'image d'un banquet célébré avec les patriarches, dans une communion pleine de joie.

Or, comme on se mettait à table à demi couché sur un divan, on se penchait sur le sein de son voisin. L'ami le plus intime du père de famille, celui à qui il voulait faire le plus d'honneur, occupait cette place tout près de lui.

Chez les Juifs, Abraham étant considéré comme le personnage le plus vénéré et le plus élevé de leur histoire, on conçoit quel honneur et quel bonheur ce trait de la parabole confère à Lazare. Quel contraste avec sa misère profonde sur la terre !

- Il faut remarquer encore l'office assigné aux anges de Dieu. (Comparer verset 9, première note.)

Il y a ici une opposition marquée à dessein entre le pauvre et le riche : Il arriva que le pauvre mourut ; et le riche aussi mourut ; sa richesse et son luxe ne retinrent pas la mort, qui, pour lui, fut d'autant plus terrible.

Puis vient ce dernier acte de son existence terrestre : il fut enterré, sans doute avec grande pompe. Jésus ne parle pas de l'ensevelissement de Lazare : Il passa inaperçu comme le convoi des pauvres.
