Jésus en appelle une dernière fois à l'autorité des Ecritures, (versets 27,44) pour faire comprendre aux disciples la nécessité divine de tout ce qui lui était arrivé, (verset 46) et pour leur révéler l'avenir de son règne et la vocation qu'ils auront à y remplir.

Ils devront prêcher en son nom (sur son autorité) la repentance et la rémission (Sin., B portent : la repentance pour la rémission) des péchés.

C'est là au fond tout l'Evangile dans son application à l'homme pécheur et perdu ; et cet Evangile devra être annoncé à toutes les nations, (comparez Matthieu 24.14 ; 28.19) en commençant par Jérusalem, la ville coupable, car ce point de départ et cette extension du règne de Dieu étaient annoncés aussi dans les Ecritures. (Psaumes 110.2 ; Esaïe 2.3 ; comparez Actes 1.8)
