Mais chaque parole de l'Eternel devient l'occasion d'une orgueilleuse réplique de la part de ce peuple satisfait de lui-même et mécontent de Dieu.

Les enfants d’Israël, à l’époque du prophète, se sont détournés de Dieu, sans garder Ses ordonnances. Dieu, dans Sa Grâce, les appelait encore. Mais ils répondirent : « en quoi devons-nous revenir ? » Dieu sonde notre cœur, pour constater le résultat des appels de Sa Parole. Les hommes citent souvent leurs afflictions pour tenter d’excuser leurs péchés, alors que ces dernières leur sont envoyées par Dieu pour tenter de les corriger.

Ce texte nous exhorte vraiment à nous ressaisir : Dieu doit être servi le premier, et les intérêts de notre âme doivent passer avant ceux de notre corps. Faisons confiance à Dieu pour pourvoir à notre besoin spirituel. Dieu dispose de nombreuses bénédictions, prêtes à nous être accordées ; hélas, par la faiblesse de notre foi et les limitations dues à notre mauvaise nature, nous n'avons « guère de place » pour les recevoir !

Même celui qui passe par l’épreuve estimera qu’il n’y a aucune perte à craindre, lorsqu'on honore le Seigneur avec son offrande.
