Ram became the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon. Nahshon became the father of Salmon.

Salmon became the father of Boaz by Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed by Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse.

Jesse became the father of King David. David became the father of Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah.

Solomon became the father of Rehoboam. Rehoboam became the father of Abijah. Abijah became the father of Asa.

Asa became the father of Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat became the father of Joram. Joram became the father of Uzziah.

Uzziah became the father of Jotham. Jotham became the father of Ahaz. Ahaz became the father of Hezekiah.

Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh. Manasseh became the father of Amon. Amon became the father of Josiah.

Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the exile to Babylon.

After the exile to Babylon, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel became the father of Zerubbabel.

Zerubbabel became the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim. Eliakim became the father of Azor.

Azor became the father of Sadoc. Sadoc became the father of Achim. Achim became the father of Eliud.

Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom was born Jesus , who is called Christ.

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the exile to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the carrying away to Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this; for after his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.

Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly.
20
But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take to yourself Mary, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21
She shall bring forth a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins."
22
Now all this has happened, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,
23
"Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son. They shall call his name Immanuel"; which is, being interpreted, "God with us."
24
Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife to himself;
25
and didn't know her sexually until she had brought forth her firstborn son. He named him Jesus.

Et Jacob fut père de Joseph, l'époux de Marie, de laquelle est né JÉSUS, appelé CHRIST.

Ainsi toutes les générations depuis Abraham jusqu'à David sont en tout quatorze générations ; et depuis David jusqu'à la captivité de Babylone, quatorze générations ; et depuis la captivité de Babylone jusqu'au Christ, quatorze générations.

Or, la naissance de Jésus-Christ arriva ainsi : Marie, sa mère, ayant été fiancée à Joseph, se trouva enceinte par la vertu du Saint-Esprit, avant qu'ils eussent été ensemble.

Alors Joseph, son époux, étant un homme de bien, et ne voulant pas la diffamer, voulut la renvoyer secrètement.
20
Mais comme il y pensait, voici, un ange du Seigneur lui apparut en songe, et lui dit : Joseph, fils de David, ne crains point de prendre Marie pour ta femme ; car ce qui a été conçu en elle est du Saint-Esprit ;
21
Et elle enfantera un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de JÉSUS (Sauveur) ; car c'est lui qui sauvera son peuple de leurs péchés.
22
Or, tout cela arriva, afin que s'accomplît ce que le Seigneur avait dit en ces termes par le prophète :

Voici, la vierge sera enceinte, et elle enfantera un fils, et on le nommera EMMANUEL, ce qui signifie : DIEU AVEC NOUS.
24
Quand Joseph fut réveillé de son sommeil, il fit comme l'ange du Seigneur lui avait commandé, et il prit sa femme.
25
Mais il ne la connut point jusqu'à ce qu'elle eût enfanté son fils premier-né, et il lui donna le nom de JÉSUS.

L'accomplissement de la prophétie était considéré par les Juifs
comme quelque chose d'évident, et c'est là-dessus que s'appuie
spécialement Matthieu. Nous trouvons là une sélection de
quelques parties de la vie de notre Sauveur, passée ici-bas, et
de ses discours qui conviennent bien pour éveiller la nation
juive à la notion de ses péchés ; pour anéantir ses attentes
erronées d'un royaume terrestre ; pour diminuer sa fierté et sa
vanité ; pour lui apprendre la nature spirituelle et l'ampleur
de l'évangile ; pour la préparer à l'admission du Païen dans
l'église.* La généalogie de Jésus. (Matthieu 1:1-17)
Un ange apparaît à Joseph. (Matthieu 1:18-25)
Matthieu 1:1-17 Remarquons le but principal de cette généalogie de
notre Sauveur, elle est digne d’intérêt : elle n’est pas
l’objet d’une vaine gloire, comme c'est bien souvent le cas de
celles des grands hommes. Elle prouve que notre Seigneur Jésus
vient bien de la nation et de la famille d'où le Messie devait
provenir. Des promesses, d’abord de bénédiction, ont été faites
à Abraham et sa postérité, puis d'autorité, à David et à sa
descendance. Il a été en effet promis à ces deux patriarches
que Christ devait naître de leur descendance,
Ge 12:3;22:18,2Samuel 7:12;Psaume 89:3;132:11.
En conséquence, si Jésus n’eut été descendant de David, et
d'Abraham, il n'aurait pas été le Messie. Ce fait est
maintenant prouvé, d’après les registres généalogiques bien
connus. Quand le Fils de Dieu a désiré revêtir notre nature, Il
est venu ici-bas, partager notre condition d’abaissement et de
misère ; mais Il était parfaitement exempt de tout péché. Quand
nous lisons les différents noms de cette généalogie, nous ne
devons pas oublier à quel point s'est abaissé le Seigneur de
gloire, dans le but de sauver la race humaine.

Considérons bien les circonstances dans lesquelles
le Fils de Dieu est entré dans ce monde misérable : que cela
puisse nous apprendre à mépriser les honneurs vains de cette
terre, comparés à la grandeur de Sa piété et de Sa sainteté.Le mystère de Christ s’étant fait « homme », est digne
d'adoration, il ne doit pas être un sujet de curiosité. Il a
été établi que Christ devait être « participant » à notre
nature, bien qu’Il fut malgré cela, pur de la souillure du
péché originel, communiquée à toute la race humaine par Adam.
Observez que Dieu désire guider celui qui Le recherche plutôt
que celui qui n'a aucune considération pour Sa Personne. Le
temps choisi par Dieu pour donner Ses directives à Son peuple
est le moment où ce dernier court à sa perte. Les réconforts
divins procurent plus de joie à l'âme quand celle-ci est dans
la perplexité.
Il est dit à Joseph, que Marie allait donner naissance au
Sauveur du monde. Il devait lui donner le nom de Jésus, ce qui
signifie « le Sauveur ». Le nom de Jésus est semblable à celui
de Josué. Sa signification est claire : ceux que Christ allait
sauver, seraient délivrés de leurs péchés ; ils allaient être
débarrassés de la culpabilité de leur iniquité, grâce à Sa
mort ; le pouvoir du péché allait être anéanti par l'Esprit de
Sa Grâce. En les sauvant du péché, Christ les sauve de la
colère et de la malédiction divines, ainsi que de toute misère
ici-bas, et ce, pour toujours !
Christ est venu pour sauver son peuple, non pas DANS son péché,
mais DU péché ; Il est venu pour racheter les siens parmi les
hommes, pour Lui-même, étant par nature, séparé des pécheurs.
Joseph a exécuté rapidement ce que l'ange du Seigneur lui a
demandé, et ce, sans attendre, de bonne grâce et sans discuter.
Si nous voulons vraiment suivre les instructions générales de
la Parole, nous devons à chaque étape de notre vie, et
particulièrement lors des grandes décisions à prendre, suivre
les directives divines ; nous trouverons alors, dans cette
obéissance la paix et le réconfort !
