Le texte reçu avec C, des majuscules et des versions, ajoute ici et au verset suivant : et être baptisés du baptême dont je suis baptisé. Ces paroles, qui se retrouvent dans le récit de Marc d'où elles ont été empruntées, ne sont pas authentiques dans celui de Matthieu.

- Les disciples et leur mère, ne savaient ce qu'ils demandaient, car ils ne pensaient qu'à un avenir glorieux, malgré la prédiction qui précède, (versets 17-19) et Jésus a devant lui la coupe de ses souffrances ! Sont-ils prêts à la partager avec lui ? La coupe est, dans les langues orientales, l'image des destinées assignées à un homme, en particulier des souffrances qu'il aura à endurer. (Psaumes 75.9 ; Jérémie 25.15 ; Matthieu 26.39 ; Jean 18.11)

Les deux disciples, auxquels Jésus s'est adressé directement et qui maintenant prennent la parole au lieu de la laisser à leur mère, ont compris que le chemin suivi par leur Maître va traverser de rudes souffrances ; mais ils ne reculent pas devant ces souffrances après avoir aspiré à la gloire. (Comparer Matthieu 26.33-35) Seulement ils n'écoutent ici que leur sincérité et leur courage, sans songer à leur faiblesse. Et toutefois Jésus ne les contredit point ; avec indulgence pour le présent et ne regardant qu'à l'avenir, il leur annonce réellement qu'ils boiront sa coupe. (vers. 23.) En effet, bientôt Jean entrera courageusement dans la cour du souverain sacrificateur et suivra son Maître jusqu'au pied de la croix, tandis que Jacques sera le premier martyr d'entre les apôtres.
