Le sang d'Abel est mentionné comme le premier qui ait été répandu sur la terre dans la lutte de l'injustice contre la vérité.
- Zacharie était un prophète dont le meurtre nous est raconté dans le second livre des Chroniques. (2Chroniques 24.20-22) Il fut en effet lapidé "dans les parvis de la maison de l'Eternel," ce qui ajoutait encore à l'horreur du crime. Il mourut en disant : "Que l'Eternel voie et recherche !" Jésus parait faire allusion à ces paroles.
- Il est difficile de dire pourquoi ce Zacharie est ici nommé fils de Barachie ; car, d'après le livre des Chroniques que nous venons de citer, son père s'appelait Jehojada. On a eu recours à diverses suppositions pour expliquer cette inexactitude. Ainsi, on a pensé que le père de Zacharie pouvait avoir eu deux noms, ce qui était assez fréquent chez les Juifs, ou que Jésus parle d'un autre Zacharie. Mais il s'agit bien du prophète dont la mort est racontée à la fin du second livre des Chroniques. Celui-ci, dans le canon des Juifs, était le dernier des livres de l'Ancien Testament.
Le meurtre de Zacharie terminait ainsi la série des meurtres racontés dans les saints livres, comme celui d'Abel l'ouvrait. Il est probable que la fausse indication de fils de Barachie a été introduite dans notre évangile par une confusion facile à faire entre ce prophète et le prophète Zacharie dont nous possédons le livre et dont le père s'appelait effectivement Barachie. (Zacharie 1.1)
Luc 11.51 ne nomme pas le père de Zacharie. Dans notre passage même, ce nom est omis par le Sin.
Enfin l'Evangile des Hébreux, au témoignage de Jérôme, portait l'indication exacte de : fils de Jehojada.
