Les toits en Orient sont en forme de terrasse ; l'on s'y tient fréquemment le matin et le soir, à l'heure de la fraîcheur. A la vue des signes prédits, ceux qui s'y trouvaient devaient fuir aussitôt sans descendre par l'escalier intérieur, en utilisant plutôt l'escalier extérieur qui de la terrasse conduisait directement dans la rue, ou en passant, suivant les circonstances, de terrasse en terrasse (car elles communiquaient souvent entre elles), sans s'arrêter en tous cas à emporter leurs biens.
Ces versets (16-18) montrent avec quelle rapidité les jugements devaient fondre sur Jérusalem. Les chrétiens, ainsi avertis, renoncèrent à toute idée de salut pour la ville, tandis que les Juifs, aveuglés, la défendirent avec une fureur désespérée.
