Les deux premiers moyens par lesquels les hommes deviennent disciples de Jésus, l'instruction et le baptême (voir la note précédente), doivent produire immédiatement en eux une vie nouvelle qui se manifeste par l'obéissance à la parole de Jésus.

Garder, pratiquer tout ce qu'il a commandé, (Matthieu 7.24-28) telle est désormais la règle suprême de leur vie. Ici encore, comme au verset 18, Jésus parle avec une autorité souveraine : il ne conseille pas, il commande.

Ces dernières paroles sont la sanction divine de l'ordre que Jésus vient de donner à ses disciples et à l'Eglise ; ce qui seul en rend possible l'accomplissement, c'est cette solennelle promesse qu'il leur fait d'être avec eux tous les jours, les assistant de sa présence divine, agissant en eux et par eux, par la puissance de son Esprit. Cette précieuse promesse qui est elle-même une nouvelle preuve de son éternelle divinité, a été visiblement accomplie depuis dix-neuf siècles, et elle le sera jusqu'à la consommation du temps.

Cette expression (comparez Matthieu 24.3, note) désigne la fin de l'économie présente, où Christ reviendra dans sa gloire, rassemblera ses rachetés, et élèvera son règne à la perfection.

- Cette dernière scène de l'évangile de Matthieu couronne dignement tout son livre, dont le but était de prouver au peuple d'Israël la dignité messianique, la royauté éternelle de Jésus. Du premier mot jusqu'au dernier, tous les actes et tous les discours du Sauveur rapportés dans ce livre fournissent cette preuve dans une grande et vivante unité.

      10 not stealing, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God, our Savior, in all things.

      10 who in time past were no people, but now are God's people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
      11 Beloved, I beg you as foreigners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
      12 having good behavior among the nations, so in that of which they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they see, glorify God in the day of visitation.
      13 Therefore subject yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether to the king, as supreme;
      14 or to governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evildoers and for praise to those who do well.
      15 For this is the will of God, that by well-doing you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
      16 as free, and not using your freedom for a cloak of wickedness, but as bondservants of God.
      17 Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
      18 Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the wicked.
      19 For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God.

      5 Yes, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence; and in moral excellence, knowledge;
