Ces hommes auxquels Jean s'adresse ici, même dans leur impénitence, s'arrogeaient le titre de fils d'Abraham et s'imaginaient que les privilèges religieux de leur peuple suffisaient pour leur assurer le salut. Jean 8.33-39 C'est ainsi qu'aujourd'hui plusieurs pensent que leur Eglise les sauvera.

Dieu est libre dans la dispensation de sa grâce ; il peut vous rejeter de son royaume et de ces pierres-là (que Jean montrait au bord du Jourdain), c'est-à-dire des hommes les plus endurcis, les plus méprisés, il peut susciter, par sa puissance créatrice, de vrais enfants d'Abraham, qui auront sa foi et son obéissance à Dieu.

(comparez les enseignements de Paul sur les vrais descendants d'Abraham, Romains 4.1,9.6 et suivants, Galates 4) Il est douteux que Jean-Baptiste fasse déjà allusion à la vocation des païens. Ce sens n'est pas nécessaire à sa pensée.
