Matthieu 4.23

World English Bible Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.

Le mot synagogue signifie réunion, assemblée et, par extension, le lieu où l'on se réunit. Depuis l'exil subsistait dans les synagogues, indépendamment des grandes assemblées solennelles dans le temple de Jérusalem, un culte qui consistait surtout dans la lecture et l'explication de la loi et des prophètes. Chaque Israélite qualifié pour cela pouvait y prendre la parole, avec l'autorisation de celui qui présidait l'assemblée. Jésus, et après lui les apôtres, saisirent fréquemment cette occasion d'annoncer l'Evangile à leur peuple. (Comparer Luc 4.15, note. - Voir sur l'organisation et le rôle de la synagogue, E. Stapfer, la Palestine au temps de J-C., p. 322 et suivants)

La bonne nouvelle de ce royaume de justice et de paix qu'il venait fonder sur la terre. (Comparer Matthieu 3.2, seconde note.)

Prêcher et guérir, telle était la double action de Jésus, c'est ainsi qu'il se manifestait comme Sauveur. Et telle est sa double action dans le monde moral.

Aussi ses miracles, œuvres de puissance et d'amour, sont-ils appelés dans le Nouveau Testament des signes.

Partout où Christ s’est rendu, Il a confirmé Sa divine mission par des miracles, véritables « emblèmes » du pouvoir de « guérison » de Sa doctrine, et des influences de l'Esprit qui l'accompagnait.

De nos jours, nous ne constatons pas systématiquement de guérisons miraculeuses de la part de Christ, mais cependant, si nous sommes guéris par la médecine, la louange Lui en revient également !

Jésus guérissait toute maladie ou infirmité ; nulle n'était incurable pour lui ; nulle n'était trop délicate, car Christ guérissait avec une parole. Trois maladies sont nommées : la paralysie, qui est la plus grande faiblesse du corps ; l'aliénation mentale, qui est la plus grande maladie de l'esprit ; et la possession par le diable, qui est la plus grande misère et la plus terrible des calamités ; malgré cela, Christ a ôté tous ces maux, et de ce fait, Il a montré que Sa grande mission dans le monde était aussi de guérir les maladies spirituelles.

Le péché est la maladie, l'infirmité, et le tourment de l'âme : Christ est venu pour le chasser l’iniquité, et ainsi guérir l'âme !
