Comment te mettrais-je, Ephraïm ? [Comment] te livrerais-je, Israël ? comment te mettrais-je comme j'ai mis Adama, et te ferais-je tel que Tséboïm ? Mon coeur est agité dans moi, mes compassions se sont toutes ensemble échauffées.

8 à 11 Osée interrompt brusquement la menace pour passer à la promesse. Dieu, après avoir témoigné à Israël un si grand amour (versets 1 à 4), ne peut cesser d'avoir compassion de lui.

Adma et Tséboïm : deux villes mentionnées Deutéronome 29.23, comme ayant été détruites en même temps que Sodome et Gomorrhe, bien qu'il ne soit pas parlé d'elles dans le récit de cette catastrophe (Genèse chapitre 19). Mais pourquoi dire ici : Adma et Tséboïm, et non : Sodome et Gomorrhe ? Sans doute parce que le nom de ces dernières villes, connues surtout par leurs crimes, eût été plus propre à exciter l'horreur que la pitié, tandis que les noms d'Adma et de Tséboïm, connues uniquement pour avoir participé au désastre, provoquait plutôt la compassion.

Se retourne... Dieu ne peut supporter cette pensée ; l'horreur le saisit, quand il se représente qu'un pareil châtiment pourrait frapper son peuple.

Dieu est lent à la colère et répugne à laisser Son peuple dériver vers la ruine.

Quand un sacrifice a dû être présenté au Père pour l'expiation des péchés, quand un Sauveur s'est avéré nécessaire pour les pécheurs, alors Dieu na pas épargné Son propre fils, bien qu'Il pouvait nous exposer tous à la violence de Sa colère.

C'est la démonstration de Sa grande patience ; par contre, quand l'homme persiste dans la voie du péché, le grand jour de Sa colère survient alors. Les compassions humaines ne sont rien, comparées à la grâce divine et miséricordieuse, vis-à-vis des pécheurs repentants ; les pensées et les voies de cette grâce sont aussi éloignées des nôtres que la terre est loin des cieux.

Dieu sait comment pardonner aux pauvres pécheurs. Il est fidèle et juste pour pardonner nos péchés et ainsi, Il manifeste Sa droiture dans la promesse de l'œuvre rédemptrice accomplie par Christ. La crainte respectueuse de la Parole de Christ nous conduira sûrement à Lui. Quand Il rugit comme un lion, Ses serviteurs et Ses enfants tremblent et ne peuvent subsister devant Sa face.

Tous ceux qui ont répondu à l'appel de l'évangile auront une place et un nom dans l'Église. Les services religieux d'Israël n'étaient alors qu'hypocrisie ; Juda, par contre, avait de la considération pour la loi divine et le peuple suivait les ordonnances pieuses de leurs ancêtres.

Soyons fidèles : Dieu honorera ceux qui l'ont honoré, par contre Il méprisera ceux qui l'ont dédaigné.
