Quelques-uns remplacent le méchant par la méchanceté, pour établir un accord avec les substantifs abstraits qui suivent. Modification inutile, car, pour que paraissent le mépris, la honte et l'outrage, il faut d'abord que soit intervenu un personnage dont les paroles et les agissements entraînent ce triple résultat. Le méchant n'a qu'à entrer en scène et à parvenir au pouvoir pour que son action délétère se fasse sentir : mépris qu'il a des autres et de leurs droits, honte qui en rejaillit sur ceux qui sont entrés en rapport avec lui, et outrages dont il finit par les abreuver.
