Dans les versets versets 4,5, Paul justifie sa douleur (verset 2) et son vœu (verset 3) par 1'énumération des prérogatives glorieuses d'Israël. Quel contraste, en effet, entre la constatation qu'Israël est rejeté et le souvenir de tant de privilèges qui lui avaient été accordés !

Le nom d'Israélites rappelait la lutte et la victoire qui avaient valu au père de ce peuple le surnom glorieux d'Israël "vainqueur de Dieu ;" (Genèse 32.28) ce nom était déjà le gage de tous les bienfaits qui devaient suivre.

L'adoption n'est pas ici, comme à Romains 8.15,16, (comparez verset 7) celle qui crée de vrais enfants de Dieu, mais l'attribution au peuple entier choisi parmi toutes les autres nations, de la qualité de fils, et de fils aîné. (Exode 4.22,Deutéronome 14.1 ; Osée 11.1 ; Jérémie 31.9)

La gloire est la manifestation visible de la présence de Dieu au milieu de son peuple, soit dans la colonne de feu, soit dans le tabernacle ou dans le temple, soit dans quelque vision contemplée par un prophète. (Exode 24.16 ; 40.34 ; 1Rois 8.10,11 ; 2Chroniques 5.14 ; Ezéchiel 1.28) Elle a été manifestée dans sa plénitude en Jésus-Christ. (Jean 1.14,2.11)

Les alliances sont l'alliance de grâce, traitée par Dieu avec son peuple ; l'apôtre emploie le pluriel, parce que l'alliance, faite avec Abraham, fut renouvelée avec Isaac, Jacob, Moïse, etc. B, D, majuscules ont le mot au singulier : l'alliance ; c'est une fausse correction.

La législation (grec l'institution de la loi, le don que Dieu a fait de sa loi à Israël, sa promulgation solennelle, Exode 19.20) constituait un privilège pour le peuple de l'alliance. (Psaumes 147.20)

Le culte, c'est-à-dire tout l'ensemble des cérémonies religieuses, sacrifices, fêtes, etc., qui supposaient et entretenaient dans le peuple la connaissance et l'adoration du vrai Dieu.

Les promesses, faites par les prophètes, embrassent les bénédictions de Dieu jusqu'au plus lointain avenir. D, majuscules portent : la promesse, c'est aussi une fausse correction.
