21 et 22 Voir déjà 20.22 et 24.29, ainsi que la citation Romains 12.20. Il ne s'agit point d'accumuler des bienfaits sur la tête d'un ennemi dans le but d'attirer sur lui un châtiment divin d'autant plus grand, comme on l'a pensé souvent. Ces charbons ardents ne sont pas les foudres de la colère divine (Psaumes 140.11), mais le sentiment insupportable (Proverbes 6.28) de honte qui s'impose à l'homme qui s'aperçoit du triste rôle que lui fait jouer sa rancune, mise en pleine lumière par la bonté de son frère.
