Ne sont-ce pas là... ? L'Eternel rappelle qu'il avait déjà réclamé la spiritualité des actes de culte et spécialement du jeûne par la bouche des anciens prophètes. Comparez Esaïe 1.11-17 ; 7.21 ; 8.3,5 ; 66.3 ; Jérémie 7.4. Il nous paraît impossible d'expliquer, comme plusieurs : Les choses que je demande de vous ne sont-elles pas celles que l'Eternel vous avait fait entendre par la bouche de... ?.

Le midi et la plaine. Ces deux parties de la Terre Sainte sont spécialement nommées ici parce qu'elles n'avaient pas été encore repeuplées et que le spectacle de leur désolation présente parlait à toutes les consciences. La plaine : le bas pays de Juda, entre la chaîne de Juda et la côte de la mer (Jérémie 32.44 ; Abdias 1.19, note).
