Nous retrouvons évidemment ici encore la même pensée qu'à verset 24. Christ remet le royaume à Dieu son Père, et c'est en ce sens qu'il lui est assujetti, c'est-à-dire dans sa dignité de Messie ou de Médiateur. Jusque-là Dieu règne par lui, dès lors il règne immédiatement.

Comme Parole éternelle (Logos), Christ reste, après son dernier triomphe sur le mal, comme avant son incarnation, dans un rapport d'inaltérable unité avec Dieu. Le changement de relation qui est ici indiqué aura lieu lorsque son œuvre de rédemption sera achevée.

Tant que le péché ou la mort règnent encore sur ses rachetés, leur combat continue sous la conduite de Christ, leur Chef, leur Roi ; mais quand tout péché aura été détruit en eux, quand leur corps même aura été rendu conforme à son corps glorieux, alors ils lui seront semblables, (1Jean 3.2) étant parvenus à l'état d'homme parfait. (Ephésiens 4.13) Alors ils n'auront plus besoin de la médiation de l'Homme-Dieu, parce qu'ils seront participants de la nature divine, (2Pierre 1.4) et que Dieu sera toutes choses en tous.

"Ce que l'apôtre a voulu exprimer ici, c'est cette idée sublime : que le terme de l'histoire et le but de l'existence de l'humanité est la formation d'une société d'êtres intelligents et libres, amenés par Christ à une parfaite communion avec Dieu et rendus par là capables d'exercer, comme Jésus lui-même ici-bas, une activité inaltérablement sainte et bienfaisante. Ce passage (versets 24-28) a été invoqué dans les temps modernes, et non sans raison, pour appuyer la doctrine d'un rétablissement universel, du salut final de tous les hommes, car si le but de l'humanité est un état de choses dans lequel Dieu soit tout en tous, il est difficile de concevoir que, ce but une fois atteint, il subsiste une classe d'êtres séparés de Dieu. Ils constitueraient à perpétuité l'empire du Prince des ténèbres, dont Paul (versets 24-26) annonce la destruction.

Toutefois, il faut reconnaître que dans ce chapitre, l'apôtre ne traite pas directement ce sujet de l'avenir des incrédules. Il parle seulement de ceux "qui se sont endormis en Christ," (verset 18) et il établit, par la résurrection du Sauveur, qu'ils ne resteront point la proie de la mort, mais en seront délivrés tout entiers, corps et âme, par la plénitude de la vie. Cela lui suffisait pour répondre victorieusement aux négations qu'il savait être répandues dans l'Eglise de Corinthe.
