Les Corinthiens se glorifiaient de l'état florissant de leur Eglise, (1Corinthiens 4.8) tandis qu'une vraie charité et une vraie sainteté auraient dû faire du péché d'un membre un sujet d'affliction et d'humiliation pour tous.

Le résultat en eût certainement été l'exclusion du coupable, comme un sérieux avertissement pour lui-même et pour tout le troupeau. (versets 3-5)
