Guibéa de Dieu : nom provenant du haut-lieu qui se trouvait là (verset 13). Plus tard, dès le règne de Saül, cette ville, située au nord de Jérusalem (aujourd'hui Tel-el-Fûl ; voir Esaïe 10.29, note), fut appelée Guibéa de Saül, comme lieu d'origine de ce premier roi (11.4 ; 15.34).

Les colonnes des Philistins. D'autres ont entendu la garnison, sens qu'a peut-être le terme hébreu dans 2Samuel 8.6,14. Le sens que nous lui donnons ici se trouve probablement 1Samuel 13.3 et certainement Genèse 19.26. Les Philistins avaient laissé dans le pays des monuments de leur pouvoir, qu'on n'avait pas osé détruire.

Une troupe de prophètes. C'est la première fois qu'il est parlé d'un groupe de prophètes. Cette réunion de jeunes hommes pieux se livrant à des exercices religieux était due sans doute à l'initiative de Samuel. C'est là l'origine de ce qu'on a appelé les écoles de prophètes, dont un certain nombre sont mentionnées dans la suite ; comparez 19.8-20 ; 2Rois 2.3,5 ; 4.38 ; 6.4. Ils s'exerçaient au chant des louanges de Dieu et à la musique sacrée, et devenaient en même temps les dépositaires des traditions religieuses de la nation.

Luth (nèbel, proprement outre) : instrument à cordes avec une caisse de résonance placée au haut.

Tambourin : voir Jérémie 31.4 ; Exode 15.20, notes.

Flûte : Esaïe 5.12 ; 30.29.

Harpe (kinnor) : instrument à cordes dont la caisse de résonance est placée en bas.
