Cette lettre devait servir à Timothée à la fois d'instruction pour lui-même et de légitimation auprès des Eglises, afin que, de toutes manières, il pût réformer les abus, s'opposer à l'erreur, confirmer la vérité, jusqu'à l'arrivée de Paul, qui exprime l'espoir de revenir bientôt en Asie. Il est douteux, toutefois, qu'il ait pu le faire. (voir l'Introduction)

- L'Eglise est appelée la maison de Dieu, (Ephésiens 2.19-22 ; 1Pierre 2.5) parce que Dieu y fait sa demeure, réalisant en elle ce dont le temple de Jérusalem offrait le symbole. (2Corinthiens 6.16) Le peuple de Dieu est son temple vivant sur la terre. (Hébreux 3.6 ; 1Pierre 4.17 ; 1Corinthiens 3.16)

Si nous admettons comme la vraie construction celle d'après laquelle ces glorieuses épithètes de colonne et d'appui de la vérité s'appliquent à l'Eglise du Dieu vivant, il est évident que Paul s'en sert pour inspirer à Timothée et à tous les serviteurs de cette Eglise le plus profond sentiment de l'importance de leurs fonctions et de la terrible responsabilité qui pèse sur eux.

Si la Parole de Dieu est seule la source de la vérité, l'Eglise du Dieu vivant, la société et la communion de ses enfants sur la terre en est la colonne et l'appui, non seulement parce que l'Eglise est dépositaire de ce trésor divin, mais parce que la vérité, rendue vivante dans l'Eglise par le Saint-Esprit, se propage au moyen de ce témoignage perpétuel, qui correspond à celui de la parole révélée, l'explique et le confirme.

Ainsi, par le ministère que Dieu a établi dans son sein, et par le vivant témoignage qu'elle rend au milieu du monde, "la vraie Eglise de Jésus-Christ est la mère de tous les hommes pieux, puisqu'elle les régénère par le moyen de la parole de Dieu, les éduque toute leur vie, les affermit et les conduit jusqu'à la perfection." Calvin.

- Tel est le sens de ce passage dans sa construction ordinaire, qui attribue à l'Eglise cette grande mission d'être "la colonne et l'appui de la vérité ;" mais il en est une autre, soutenue par d'excellents interprètes, et d'après laquelle ces derniers mots s'appliqueraient non à l'Eglise, mais au mystère de piété. (1Timothée 3.16)

Voici, dans cette pensée, comment il faudrait construire les versets 1Timothée 3.15,16 "Afin que, si je tarde, tu saches comment il faut se conduire dans la maison de Dieu, qui est l'Eglise du Dieu vivant. Colonne et appui de la vérité, et, de l'aveu de tous, grand est le mystère de piété : Dieu manifesté en chair, justifié en Esprit, etc."

Que la manifestation de Dieu en chair soit la colonne et le fondement de la vérité, c'est ce qui est évident et partout confirmé dans les Ecritures. (1Jean 4.2) Cette image est plus rigoureusement vraie et d'un sens plus profond appliquée au mystère de piété que si elle est appliquée à l'Eglise.

On reproche à cette construction de rendre la phrase moins coulante ; mais le style de Paul offre bien d'autres exemples de cette rudesse. On objecte encore que cette construction détache la pensée de ce qui précède ; cela est vrai, mais c'est ici le commencement d'un nouvel enseignement, qui se poursuit dans le chapitre suivant, où il est destiné à combattre des erreurs tendant à nier ou à fausser le grand mystère de piété, colonne et appui de la vérité. L'une et l'autre interprétation peuvent se défendre et renferment une grande pensée à méditer.
