Les raisonnements sont les conclusions de la logique, de la raison humaine. Paul les compare à une hauteur, une tour, une forteresse, (verset 4) où, dans son orgueilleuse révolte, l'homme prétend se retrancher contre la connaissance de Dieu, c'est-à-dire contre la vraie science de Dieu, sa vérité, sa volonté.

L'autre expression, que nous traduisons par pensée, signifie quelque chose qu'on a pensé, arrêté dans son esprit, un conseil, une opinion, un système. Or Paul déclare que l'Evangile détruit ces hauteurs et rend ces conseils de la sagesse captifs sous l'obéissance de Christ.

C'est par cette obéissance à Christ que la raison échappe à l'esclavage de l'erreur et du péché, et retrouve la vraie liberté pour laquelle elle a été créée. "La vérité vous rendra libres." Il faut bien que l'homme consente à ce que l'Evangile lui ôte son indépendance à l'égard de Dieu, qu'elle s'appelle propre justice ou propre sagesse ; il reçoit en retour la vraie indépendance et la force divine qui lui permet de soumettre les autres à Christ.
