On peut traduire par : nouvelle création, aussi bien que par : nouvelle créature, le mot grec ayant les deux sens.

Peut-être l'apôtre a-t-il présente à la pensée la promesse de Dieu (Esaïe 43.18,19 ; 65.17 ; comparez pour la complète réalisation de cette promesse, Apocalypse 21.1-5) ; et il voit dès maintenant cette création nouvelle intérieurement accomplie en chaque croyant.

Il y a, effectivement, dans chaque chrétien une seconde création, il est une nouvelle créature. Sa vie naturelle, sur laquelle régnait le péché, a péri, (verset 14) Dieu a créé en lui, par son Esprit, une vie nouvelle, dont toutes les manifestations sont opposées à celles du vieil homme, pensées, affections, désirs, besoins, joies et peines, craintes et espérances.

Virtuellement, l'apôtre peut donc dire que toutes choses ont été faites nouvelles ; car l'œuvre de Dieu, une fois commencée, n'a d'autre terme que la perfection. (Philippiens 1.6 ; Ephésiens 2.10 ; Galates 6.15)

- Mais pour tout cela il faut être en Christ, c'est-à-dire dans une communion vivante, intime avec lui.
