29 et 30 Jéhu avait mis fin au culte de Baal ; mais il avait le même intérêt qu'avait eu Jéroboam, à empêcher son peuple de retourner à Jérusalem. De là le juste milieu qu'il crut devoir suivre. C'est ce qui lui attira un témoignage et de satisfaction et de mécontentement de la part de Dieu ; ce témoignage lui fut rendu par un prophète.

Quatrième génération : voir 15.12. La violence de la réaction dont il fut l'auteur s'explique jusqu'à un certain point par l'opposition tyrannique qu'avait exercées sur Israël la famille d'Achab ; mais les moyens dont il se servit pour exécuter le châtiment que Dieu avait décrété sur cette famille, restent à sa charge.

On peut logiquement se demander si Jéhu régla vraiment sa conduite sur de bons principes, au vu des quelques faux-pas qu'il commit ; quel que soit le « service » rendu à Dieu, aucun ne restera sans rétribution. Une véritable conversion ne doit pas être engendrée à la suite d'un grave péché, mais par l'ensemble de toutes nos fautes ; la Parole nous enseigne d'une part, à ne pas glorifier de faux dieux, mais aussi à ne pas sombrer dans de vaines adorations idolâtres. Une véritable conversion ne doit pas seulement être produite par l'horreur des péchés qui ne conduisent qu'à la ruine, mais aussi par ceux qui ont pu amener illicitement du profit. C'est en abandonnant le lourd fardeau qui nous écrase, que nous pouvons alors vraiment nous approcher de Dieu en toute confiance.

Jéhu montra beaucoup de zèle et d'ardeur pour déraciner la fausse religion qui envahissait le pays d'Israël, mais il ne s'inquiéta pas spécialement de savoir s'il accomplissait son devoir et agissait pleinement selon la volonté divine. Ceux qui demeurent dans une certaine insouciance, doivent craindre de ne pas bénéficier pleinement de la Grâce divine. Le peuple était également négligent : il ne faut pas s'étonner, en conséquence, de voir l'Éternel envoyer l'épreuve en cette période, sur le pays d'Israël. Les Hébreux n'accomplirent pas pleinement leur devoir envers Dieu, ce Dernier a donc limité leur essor, leur richesse, et leur puissance.
