Ces douces paroles de consolation et d'espérance, ce vœu pour l'affermissement des chrétiens de Thessalonique, devaient pénétrer dans leurs cœurs comme une rosée rafraîchissante, après les impressions de crainte et de tristesse, qu'ils avaient sans doute reçues de la prophétie qu'ils venaient de lire. (versets 3-12 ; comparez verset 14, note.)

- Il y a un magnifique témoignage rendu à la divinité de Jésus-Christ dans cette invocation qui s'adresse à lui, comme à Dieu le Père, et qui lui attribue, ainsi qu'à Dieu, le pouvoir divin d'agir sur le cœur des fidèles et d'y opérer toutes les grâces que Paul demande ici. (Comparer 1Thessaloniciens 3.13, note.)

- L'amour éternel de Dieu en Christ, sa grâce qu'il nous a révélée en lui, tel est le seul fondement d'une vraie et permanente consolation, non moins que d'une bonne espérance. Et chaque expérience nouvelle que le chrétien fait de cette grâce, est à la fois pour lui un moyen d'affermissement, et un gage que l'œuvre de Dieu en lui sera consommée jusqu'à la perfection. En effet, toute bonne œuvre et toute bonne parole constituent la vie chrétienne tout entière. C'est à tort que Calvin et d'autres restreignent ce mot de parole à la doctrine ; à tort aussi que le texte reçu intervertit l'ordre de ces deux termes.
