World English Bible Many of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted their price, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.

L'exercice des arts occultes ou de la magie était très répandu ; on prétendait par ce moyen pénétrer les secrets de la nature, de l'avenir et du monde invisible. (Actes 8.9 ; 13.6)

Il existait une foule de livres traitant de ces sujets ; ceux en particulier qu'on appelait les "écrits éphésiens," étaient célèbres partout.

Un grand nombre donc de ceux qui en possédaient, devenus chrétiens et repris dans leur conscience, les apportèrent et les brûlèrent en présence de tous les fidèles.

La valeur de ces livres indiquée ici, cinquante mille pièces d'argent (il s'agit sans doute de drachmes), paraît énorme (approximativement 45 000 fr.).

Mais si l'on se souvient que ces livres étaient des manuscrits, dont un seul se vendait souvent à un prix élevé, on ne sera pas tenté de voir dans ce chiffre une exagération.

Ce fut là une magnifique victoire de l'Evangile sur la superstition et le paganisme. Luc lui-même en fait la remarque dans son récit. (verset 20)
