Voici ce que déclare le Seigneur : « J’ai plus d’un crime à reprocher aux Syriens de Damas, et en particulier celui-ci : ils ont écrasé sous des herses de fer les habitants de Galaad. C’est pourquoi, je ne reviendrai pas sur ma décision :

3 à 5 Le prophète commence par les Syriens. La capitale, Damas, représente, le peuple entier.

A cause de trois crimes. On a entendu cette formule, qui se retrouve en tête de chacune des menaces suivantes, dans le sens d'une persévérance et d'un accroissement de méchanceté chez chacun de ces peuples. Il nous paraît plus naturel de lui donner le sens qu'elle a dans cette expression latine : terque quaterque beati. Trois désigne déjà un superlatif et, par conséquent un degré de perversité pleinement suffisant pour justifier le châtiment. Mais quatre représente le surplus qui fait déborder la mesure de la colère divine et motive le : Je ne le rétracterai point. Le décret actuellement prononcé ne sera point révoqué. Comparez les expressions analogues : Michée 5.5 ; Job 5.19 ; Proverbes 30.15,18,21,29.

Cet arrêt irrévocable reste toutefois conditionnel quant à l'époque de son accomplissement. Car il ne s'accomplira que lorsque la méchanceté sera arrivée au comble signalé par le chiffre quatre.

Broyé Galaad. Il paraît résulter de 2Samuel 12.31 que cette expression doit être prise à la lettre et signifie un supplice affreux infligé aux habitants de Galaad par les Syriens de Damas, après que ceux-ci avaient remporté une victoire sur les Israélites habitant de l'autre côté du Jourdain, voir 2Rois 10.32-33 ; 13.7.

Avec des traîneaux de fer. Ici un instrument de supplice semblable aux herses employées en Orient pour battre le blé et couper la paille. Ces instruments sont formés, d'une planche arquée sur le devant et munie en-dessous de pointes acérées, et traînés sur l'aire par un attelage de bœufs.
