Après avoir exposé la nature divine de Christ, son rapport avec Dieu le Père, puis avec la création et la conservation de l'univers, l'apôtre passe à un autre domaine où le Fils de Dieu occupe également le premier rang, c'est l'Eglise. Il y passe sans transition, bien que sa pensée suppose les grands faits de l'incarnation et de la mort du Sauveur. Il le proclame d'abord Chef (tête) de l'Eglise, probablement avec une intention polémique contre ceux qui ne "retenaient pas le Chef." (Colossiens 2.19) L'Eglise est désignée, selon une image que l'apôtre affectionne, comme le corps de Christ, dont il est la tête ou le chef. (1Corinthiens 10.17 ; 12.12,27 ; Ephésiens 1.22,23 ; 4.15,16 ; 5.23 ; comparez ci-dessous verset 24)

Dans l'Eglise qui est une création nouvelle, comme dans l'autre création, Christ est le commencement ; par lui et en lui a commencé une humanité nouvelle, une vie nouvelle dont il est la source, le type premier d'où tout dérive.

Cette grande pensée, exprimée par un mot encore vague, est précisée par un autre terme qui nous place au centre même de l'œuvre de Christ : c'est par sa résurrection, c'est comme premier-né d'entre les morts, comme "les prémices" (1Corinthiens 15.20) que Christ a été le commencement. Sa résurrection, victoire sur le péché et la mort, devient la résurrection et la vie de tous ses frères, auxquels il a ainsi frayé le chemin de la mort à la vie.

Le mot premier-né n'est donc pas employé ici dans un sens absolument différent de verset 15 ; seulement là Christ est représenté comme l'origine de la création matérielle, ici comme l'origine de la création nouvelle, (comparez Romains 8.28 ; Hébreux 1.6) en sorte qu'en toutes choses il est le premier (le premier et le dernier) ; c'est en lui que nous devons chercher toutes choses, la vie, le salut, et c'est à lui que tout doit être soumis.
