C'est ton nom que portent : comme une femme abandonnée de son époux ou un enfant de son père, mais qui portent toujours encore son nom. La prière aboutit à une série de cris adressés à la fidélité de Dieu.

Cette prière a des analogies avec celles d'Esdras chapitre 9 et de Néhémie chapitre 9. La parenté de certaines expressions s'explique bien par la communauté d'expériences et d'idées, pendant et après l'exil. Toutes les trois sont des confessions de péché où ceux qui prient s'identifient complètement avec leur peuple. Daniel, comme Esdras, souffre pour Israël du péché dont il se sent solidaire et responsable (comparez verset 20, mon péché) bien qu'il n'y ait pris extérieurement aucune part, Mais ce qui distingue profondément la prière de Daniel des deux autres, c'est que celles-ci en restent à la confession et au cri d'angoisse, tandis que la première aboutit à une ardente et irrésistible supplication. Ou bien, l'homme qui a composé cette prière au nom de Daniel se faisait une idée bien élevée de ce médiateur entre Dieu et son peuple, ou bien il est Daniel lui-même, ainsi que le dit le texte (verset 2) et que nous le pensons. Du reste, la prière d'Azaria, déjà mentionnée chapitre 3, montre clairement par ses allusions transparentes ce qu'aurait été la prière de Daniel si elle eût été composée sous les Maccabées.
