L'incrédulité d'Israël est censurée ; si Dieu le sauve, ce sera par pure grâce.

Le discours s'adresse au peuple d'Israël, plus spécialement à celui de Juda. Ce peuple, issu de la source de Juda (comparez Psaumes 68.27), a, plus que toute autre portion d'Israël, la prétention d'être le peuple de Dieu, parce qu'il est demeuré relativement fidèle à son culte (1.11-17) ; il ne peut donc refuser d'écouter celui qu'il professe adorer.

Qui jurez par le nom de l'Eternel : et non par celui de faux dieux. Jurer par le nom de l'Eternel, est selon la loi un acte de culte et l'un des traits distinctifs des adorateurs du vrai Dieu (comparez 19.18).

Les Juifs disent représenter la descendance de Jacob, et utilisent le nom de Jéhovah, en tant que Dieu. Ils s'enorgueillissent du fait d'avoir bâti Jérusalem et le temple, bien qu'il n'y ait aucune trace réelle de sainteté dans leur vie.

Si nous ne sommes pas sincères dans notre piété, nous ne faisons qu'invoquer le nom du Seigneur en vain.

Par l'intermédiaire des prophéties, Dieu a révélé Ses plans aux enfants d'Israël, quant à leur avenir, bien avant qu'elles ne se réalisent.

Dieu a suffisamment annoncé et réalisé Ses desseins, pour empêcher les hommes de se vanter de quoi que ce soit ; le péché et la ruine condamnèrent en fait les plus orgueilleux ; tôt ou tard, toutes les bouches seront muettes, tout deviendra silencieux devant Sa Face.

Nous sommes tous, des « enfants de la désobéissance ». Là où le péché original a été commis, toute iniquité suivra. La conscience de chaque être humain ne peut que témoigner de la véracité des Écritures. Puisse le Seigneur nous révéler notre état réel, et nous rendre fervents dans la lecture de Sa Parole !
