Tout premier-né. Israël étant, par son élection, le premier-né de l'Eternel, les Egyptiens qui ont refusé de le laisser libre ont été punis par la perte de leurs propres premiers-nés, frappés en lieu et place de tout le peuple égyptien (4.22 et suivants). C'est là la raison de l'ordonnance relative aux premiers-nés israélites. En raison des péchés du peuple, ils n'ont pu être préservés de la mort qu'au moyen du sang de l'agneau pascal ; comme tels, ils appartiennent tout spécialement à l'Eternel et doivent être consacrés à son service ; comparez verset 15 ; Nombres 3.13 ; 8.17

L'ordonnance est étendue aux premiers-nés des animaux des Israélites, parce que les premiers-nés des animaux des Egyptiens avaient été frappés comme ceux des hommes.
