4 à 6 Le message divin

Les paroles de Jéhova qui suivent sont la base divine sur laquelle l'alliance va être traitée. Elles rappellent au peuple (verset 4) ce que Dieu a déjà fait pour lui. C'est Dieu qui a pris l'initiative de l'alliance ; il a fait quelque chose pour Israël avant qu'Israël eût rien fait pour lui : il l'a tiré de la servitude et pour ainsi dire transporté jusqu'au pied du Sinaï. Cette grâce signalée est pour Israël un gage que Dieu accomplira pour lui ce qu'il va lui promettre encore. Puis Dieu expose ce qu'il veut faire de ce peuple d'Israël, le privilège qu'il lui destine (versets 5 et 6). Cette nouvelle grâce diffère de la première en ce qu'elle est promise sous condition (si vous obéissez, etc.). C'est par cette obéissance qu'Israël pourra devenir, conformément au dessein de Dieu, un peuple qui lui soit consacré d'une façon particulière. Dieu est, comme Créateur, le roi de tous les peuples mais, comme Libérateur d'Israël, il a acquis sur lui un droit spécial et veut établir entre ce peuple et lui une relation nouvelle et d'un autre ordre.

Cette déclaration divine, qui énonce dans toute sa grandeur l'idée même de la théocratie, est exprimée en style poétique (le parallélisme des propositions) et diffère par là des prescriptions qui suivent, ainsi que des lois qui constituent l'alliance elle-même.

Sur des ailes d'aigle. Cette image se retrouve à peu près dans le même sens Deutéronome 32.11. Elle représente la facilité avec laquelle Dieu leur a fait surmonter les difficultés du voyage, et s'applique tout particulièrement au passage de la mer Rouge, barrière qui paraissait infranchissable, et au voyage à travers le désert.
