Les directives de ce chapitre se rapportent au cinquième et au sixième commandement ; bien qu'elles diffèrent de nos pratiques actuelles et qu'elles ne nous concernent pas directement, elles expliquent cependant la loi et les règles de justice morale de cette époque. Le serviteur, de par son état, était une image de l'esclavage qu'entraîne le péché et de la servitude à Satan, que l'homme subit lorsqu'il se détourne de l'adoration divine et qu'il transgresse la Loi. De même, quand le serviteur devient libre, il est l'emblème de la liberté offerte par Christ, le Fils de Dieu : Jésus-Christ libère vraiment Son peuple de l'esclavage ; étant ainsi gratuitement libérés, nous sommes alors sous le bénéfice de la Grâce !
