וְעַתָּה֙ הַנִּ֣יחָה לִּ֔י וְיִֽחַר־אַפִּ֥י בָהֶ֖ם וַאֲכַלֵּ֑ם וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה אוֹתְךָ֖ לְג֥וֹי גָּדֽוֹל׃
Now therefore leave me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of you a great nation."

Et maintenant laisse ma colère. C'est comme si déjà, sans avoir rien dit. Moïse exerçait par sa présence et son regard suppliant une action qui arrête le bras de l'Eternel prêt à frapper.

Que je les consume. En agissant ainsi Dieu n'aurait pas rompu ses engagements avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob. Car Moïse, dont la postérité aurait été substituée au peuple actuel, était lui-même de la postérité des patriarches.

Je ferai de toi...'La fidélité de Moïse à son office de médiateur et son attachement à son peuple sont ici mis à une forte épreuve. Il s'agit de savoir ce qu'il préférera : sauver l'existence de ce peuple rebelle et obstinément idolâtre, ou voir surgir un nouveau peuple auquel son nom restera à jamais attaché. Mais à quoi bon cette épreuve ? Dieu ne connaît-il pas déjà les derniers replis de son cœur ? Assurément ; mais le progrès de la vie morale de l'homme exige qu'il soit mis de temps en temps en demeure de prendre de saintes et héroïques décisions.
