World English Bible I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh;

Et cette purification extérieure résultera de celle des cœurs que Dieu promet d'accomplir lui-même. Ils ne seront qu'un cœur : tous d'accord pour adorer Jéhova et lui seul.

Le cœur de pierre : insensible aux bienfaits de Dieu et dans son froid égoïsme ne cherchant que son intérêt propre ; indifférent à la cause de Dieu et au bien des hommes.

Un cœur de chair : sensible à I'action divine et s'abandonnant tout entier à l'amour qui lui est témoigné d'en-haut (36.26 ; Jérémie 31.31 et suivants ; comparez Sophonie 3.9). Cette promesse a eu un accomplissement relatif dès le retour de la captivité ; car dès ce moment l'idolâtrie, comme vice national, a été extirpée du peuple d'Israël ; et ce fait extérieur supposait évidemment un complet changement moral. Mais ce changement n'épuise pas encore le sens profond de la promesse. Le don du Saint-Esprit à la Pentecôte a marqué, un nouveau progrès. Il ne reste plus, pour l'accomplissement parfait de cette promesse, que cette grâce de la régénération, dont jouit déjà l'Eglise, soit étendue à tout Israël.
