Quand j’ai repassé près de toi et que je t’ai revue, je me suis aperçu que tu avais atteint l’âge de l’amour. Alors j’ai étendu sur toi le pan de mon manteau et j’ai couvert ta nudité. Je t’ai prêté serment pour conclure une alliance avec toi ; le Seigneur, l’Eternel, le déclare. C’est ainsi que tu es devenue mienne.

J'étendis sur toi. Comparez Ruth 3.9. Par cet acte symbolique, un homme déclarait prendre une femme pour épouse. C'était l'emblème de la protection dont il s'engageait à la couvrir désormais.

Je te fis serment. Ces paroles et les suivantes se rapportent à l'alliance qui fut conclue durant le séjour au Sinaï entre Dieu et le peuple, par le don de la loi. Ce fut comme l'époque du mariage de l'Eternel avec son peuple. Comparez Esaïe 54.5 ; Jérémie 31.32 avec Exode 19.5 ; 24.8.
