De l'énormité. Cette expression est expliquée par ce qui suit. La souillure de Juda surpassait en noirceur celle de tous les autres peuples ; car Dieu avait tout fait pour l'en nettoyer. Mais ni les moyens de grâce, ni les appels des prophètes, ni les châtiments antérieurs n'avaient produit la purification, qui ne pouvait plus être obtenue que par la ruine et l'exil. Cette menace s'applique avec une double force aux peuples chrétiens infidèles, qui négligent d'user des moyens de sanctification qui leur sont offerts dans l'économie nouvelle (comparez Esaïe 6.11-13).
