Les Horiens. Ce nom, qui signifie habitants des cavernes, désigne la population primitive du pays d'Edom, situé entre la mer Morte et l'extrémité orientale de la mer Rouge (Deutéronome 2.12,22).

Leur montagne. Ces montagnes sont spécialement leurs, parce que les cavernes qu'elles renferment leur servaient d'habitations.

Séir. Ce nom, qui signifie velu, vient probablement de ce que les montagnes du pays sont couvertes de forêts.

El-Paran. El signifie grand arbre, et, se dit surtout des chênes et des palmiers, et Paran désigne le désert qui s'étend à l'ouest du pays d'Edom, entre la presqu'île du Sinaï et le pays de Juda. Ce El-Paran est probablement identique avec Elath, port qui a donné son nom au golfe élanitique, celui des deux golfes septentrionaux de la mer Rouge qui est le plus à l'Est (Deutéronome 2.8 ; 2Rois 14.22). On comprend que Kédorlaomer ait tenu à la possession de ce port, qui lui donnait accès sur la mer Rouge.

Près du désert. Elath était à l'entrée du désert de Paran.
