6 à 20 Ces versets décrivent la ruine du Chaldéen dans un chant de menaces mis dans la bouche des nations et composé de cinq strophes dont chacune comprend trois versets.

  1. Le Chaldéen est désigné comme un conquérant avide et pillard, versets 6 à 8
  2. comme un chef orgueilleux de dynastie, versets 9 à 11
  3. comme un souverain cruel, abusant du travail et des forces des peuples vaincus, versets 12 à 14
  4. comme se réjouissant de l'opprobre d'autrui, versets 15 à 17
  5. comme idolâtre, versets 18 à 20.
Tandis que les quatre premières strophes développent cette pensée : le Chaldéen est un tyran, un opresseur des peuples, la cinquième et dernière relève le péché capital du souverain ennemi, représentant de la nation entière, son idolâtrie, comme cause principale de sa ruine à venir.

Gages : Les biens que le Chaldéen a acquis par la violence sont représentés comme des gages illicites que, semblable à un usurier sans entrailles, il a arrachés aux peuples et qu'il devra restituer en son temps.

Ceux qui te mordront : ceux qui te feront restituer le fruit de tes exactions, ces gages dont tu t'étais jadis chargé. Le mot employé ici et qui signifie en hébreu mordre : naschak, rappelle le terme qui signifie usure : néschek.

Ne se lèveront-ils pas... ? Ces nations opprimées et qui semblaient anéanties, surgiront de nouveau pour tirer vengeance de leur oppresseur.
