Il est bien évident qu'il est tout aussi impossible que Dieu mente dans sa promesse seule que dans sa promesse accompagnée d'un serment. Il ne fit intervenir ce dernier que par condescendance pour la foi d'Abraham et des autres croyants après lui.

Dès que Dieu s'abaisse à parler un langage humain, plus il met de solennité et d'insistance dans les promesses de sa grâce, plus il saisit et soutient la foi qui s'y appuie.

Ainsi, de même que les hommes confirment leur parole par le serment en y faisant intervenir le nom et la présence du Dieu saint et juste qu'ils prennent à témoin de leurs déclarations, de même Dieu, jurant par lui-même, imprime vivement dans l'âme du croyant le sentiment de la grandeur, de la puissance, de la sainteté de Celui qui fait la promesse, et c'est là l'inébranlable fondement de la foi ; c'est, comme l'exprime l'auteur, un puissant encouragement.

Et voilà pourquoi il revendique cet encouragement pour les chrétiens, aussi bien que pour les croyants de l'ancienne Alliance.

"Rien n'est plus consolant pour un cœur plein de foi que de savoir que son salut est entre les mains de Dieu, qui ne peut se tromper dans ses desseins ni nous tromper dans ses promesses." Quesnel.

C'est-à-dire, nous qui, retenant (Hébreux 4.14) cette espérance, y trouvons un refuge dans lequel nous sommes à l'abri du danger.

Le grec porte : Nous qui nous sommes réfugiés à retenir ferme l'espérance.

Plusieurs interprètes construisent la phrase autrement : Afin que nous ayons un puissant encouragement à retenir l'espérance proposée, nous qui avons cherché un refuge, sous-entendu : en Dieu.

Notre traduction se justifie mieux, car les mots : nous ayons un puissant encouragement, n'appellent pas de complément, tandis que l'expression : nous qui avons cherché un refuge, en exige un.
