Ces deux versets (Hébreux 9.13,14) doivent confirmer (car), par un raisonnement a fortiori et par une application vivante à la conscience la grande vérité de l'expiation du péché par le sang de Christ, exprimée à Hébreux 9.12.

Tout Israélite savait que le sang de boucs et de taureaux (Lévitique 16.6-11 ; 14.15, etc.) et l'aspersion faite avec l'eau où l'on avait mêlé la cendre d'une génisse (Nombres 19, voir surtout Hébreux 9.13,20), purifiaient d'une souillure légale, par exemple de l'attouchement d'un mort, et rendaient à celui qui venait d'offrir ce sacrifice la pureté de la chair, indispensable pour qu'il jouît des privilèges d'un membre du peuple.

Mais tout cela n'était qu'un symbole, la souillure légale n'était que l'image du péché, qu'elle rappelait sans cesse ; la purification cérémonielle, l'image de la vraie purification, qu'elle faisait désirer. C'est la conscience qui devait être purifiée des œuvres mortes pour servir le Dieu vivant, deux choses qui sont également impossibles à l'homme.

Les œuvres mortes, (comparez Hébreux 6.1) en effet, ne sont pas les cérémonies par lesquelles l'israélite cherchait la purification devant Dieu ; ce sont tous les péchés qui pèsent sur la conscience du pécheur et ne lui permettent pas de s'approcher de Dieu pour lui rendre son culte (tel est le sens du verbe : servir Dieu), ce sont, d'une manière plus générale, toutes les œuvres qui procèdent de l'homme irrégénéré, car il est lui-même mort, (Ephésiens 2.1) et la mort ne saurait produire la vie.

Ses œuvres sont mortes, tant qu'elles ne sont pas en lui le produit d'une vie nouvelle, créée par l'Esprit de Dieu et par laquelle seulement nous sommes capables de servir le Dieu vivant. Quel contraste entre un tel service et cette mort morale de l'homme naturel, qui frappe de stérilité toute son activité.

Servir, dans l'original, c'est remplir une fonction sacerdotale célébrer un culte. (Hébreux 9.9 ; 12.28) Le chrétien doit être dans toute sa vie un sacrificateur du Dieu vivant, (Hébreux 3.12) s'offrir lui-même en sacrifice, et faire de chaque acte de sa vie un culte en esprit et en vérité.

Comment s'élever des œuvres mortes, qui souillent la conscience, à cet idéal de sainteté ? L'auteur en indique le moyen : le sang de Christ. Il montre en quoi a consisté le sacrifice du Sauveur, dans quelles conditions celui-ci l'a accompli : Qui, par l'Esprit éternel, s'est offert lui-même sans tache à Dieu.

Toutes les expressions employées font ressortir la pensée que le sacrifice de Christ est un acte moral, dans le sens le plus élevé, le plus absolu de ce mot. C'est ce qui le distingue profondément des sacrifices symboliques rappelés à Hébreux 9.13, dans lesquels les victimes étaient passives. Il s'offre lui-même, donc c'est le sacrifice volontaire du dévouement et de l'amour sans tache. (Lévitique 22.21 ; 1Pierre 1.19)

Ainsi c'est un sacrifice digne du Dieu saint et juste (car c'est à Dieu qu'il s'offre). Mais surtout il s'offre par l'Esprit éternel, c'est-à-dire animé, porté, consacré pour cet acte par l'Esprit de Dieu qui était en lui sans mesure dans une harmonie ineffable avec Dieu, qui s'associe à son œuvre par son Esprit, qui l'approuve, qui reçoit le sacrifice de sa volonté, de sa vie humaine, solidaire de notre humanité tout entière. Mais l'auteur dit plus encore.

Il aurait pu employer le terme ordinaire de "Saint-Esprit," que lui prête, en effet, une variante peu autorisée ; mais non, il se sert de ce terme inusité : "l'Esprit éternel." Son intention est de marquer que cet Esprit, qui communiquait à la personne du Christ "une puissance de vie impérissable," (Hébreux 7.16) confère à son sacrifice une valeur éternelle : c'est l'œuvre de Dieu accomplie pour l'éternité.

La plupart des commentateurs modernes, il est vrai, se fondant sur le fait que l'article manque en grec et qu'il y a proprement : par un esprit éternel, se refusent à voir dans cette expression l'Esprit de Dieu ; elle caractériserait soit la nature divine, soit la constitution morale du Christ, et serait destinée à expliquer comment il peut encore remplir son office de souverain sacrificateur céleste après s'être livré lui-même à la mort.

- Telle est la source intarissable "ouverte pour la purification du péché et de la souillure." Mais comment la conscience en estelle purifiée de ses œuvres mortes ?

Dès l'Ancien Testament, le symbole devait indiquer la réalité. Il y avait en tout sacrifice deux choses distinctes : l'immolation de la victime et l'aspersion de son sang sur le pécheur qui l'offrait. (Hébreux 9.13) Par ce dernier acte qu'il subissait, l'Israélite confessait solennellement que c'était de lui qu'il s'agissait, lui qui avait péché, qui était souillé, qui avait mérité la mort, qui devait, après avoir obtenu son pardon, s'offrir en sacrifice vivant et saint, mourir réellement au péché, en un mot, s'approprier personnellement tout le sens de son sacrifice.

De même et à plus forte raison sous la nouvelle Alliance, c'est en devenant un avec Christ par une foi réelle que le pécheur est justifié ; c'est en Christ que sa conscience reprend vie, se détache de la souillure par la puissance divine de la croix ; c'est en Christ, et avec lui, qu'il meurt par degrés au péché, au monde, à lui-même, c'est en lui qu'il ressuscite pour une vie nouvelle et sainte.

      27 who doesn't need, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices daily, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. For he did this once for all, when he offered up himself.
