Le Père des lumières, c'est l'Auteur, le Créateur des astres resplendissants, (Psaumes 136.7-9) symboles eux-mêmes de la lumière éternelle du Dieu qui les a faits. Ces astres ne répandent pas une lumière toujours égale ; il y a en eux "changement et obscurcissement de rotation" (sens littéral) ; par le mouvement qui leur est propre et par leurs changements de position, une ombre se répand sur eux et leur clarté ne nous parvient plus.

En Dieu, et dans les dons de sa grâce, il n'y a rien de pareil : tout y est don excellent, présent parfait. Beyschlag, Oltramare et d'autres traduisent : "Il ne descend que don excellent et que présent parfait d'en haut, du Père des lumières..."

Ainsi énoncée, la pensée répondrait exactement à celle de verset 13. Mais Jacques a écrit : "Tout don excellent et tout présent parfait est d'en haut descendant du Père des lumières," et, quoique sa proposition forme un vers hexamètre (plusieurs y voient une citation), on ne saurait pourtant pas, en invoquant l'inversion permise dans le stylée poétique, traduire comme s'il y avait : "Tout don venant d'en haut est excellent..."

L'auteur désigne les grâces que Dieu nous dispense par deux expressions synonymes : don excellent (grec bon) et présent parfait. Le second de ces termes précise le premier, en le désignant comme un don gratuit. (Romains 5.16)

Suivant d'autres interprètes, la relation des deux termes serait celle-ci : "Ce qui est donné comme un don excellent et ce qui, une fois reçu, se manifeste comme un présent parfait." En tous cas, il est arbitraire de faire intervenir ici la distinction des dons de la nature et des dons de la grâce. Cette perfection de tous les dons de Dieu, le Père des lumières, est proclamée dans ce passage : "Dieu est lumière, et il n'y a point en lui de ténèbres." (1Jean 1.5)
