Cette promesse est encore dans un rapport immédiat avec la parole précédente : "parce que je m'en vais au Père."

Aussi la plupart des interprètes modernes, peut-être avec raison, font-ils dépendre encore la seconde proposition du parce que ; ils traduisent : "et que tout ce que vous demanderez en mon nom, je le ferai."

Les disciples restent avec Jésus dans un rapport plus intime et plus vivant que jamais. Eux, sur la terre, prient en son nom, et lui leur accorde toutes leurs demandes. (Grec : moi, je le ferai.)

Grâce à son action puissante, ils accomplissent ses œuvres, et même de plus grandes, afin que le Père soit glorifié dans le Fils. (Voir Jean 13.32, note.)

Mais qu'on le remarque bien, Jésus donne ici à la prière un caractère tout spécial et tout nouveau pour ses disciples, il s'agit de la prière qui s'adresse à Dieu en son nom, et il insistera encore sur cette parole. (Jean 15.16 ; 16.23)

Quel en est le sens ? En son nom, ne signifie pas seulement : sur son ordre, en son autorité, par ses mérites ; dans le style des Ecritures le nom désigne l'être, révélé dans son essence et toutes ses propriétés.

Prier au nom de Jésus, c'est donc, comme le dit Keil, dont M. Godet adopte l'interprétation, prier "en nous replongeant avec foi dans la connaissance que nous avons reçue de lui comme Fils de Dieu abaissé et glorifié," ou, mieux encore (car cette connaissance n'est point purement intellectuelle, mais implique une relation de vie) c'est prier en Jésus lui-même, le seul médiateur qui nous ouvre l'accès au trône de la grâce, c'est prier dans une communion intime avec lui, selon sa volonté, par son Esprit, qui seul nous communique la puissance d'accomplir cet acte religieux.

Quand celui qui prie ainsi se sent devenu un avec le Sauveur, il est certain d'être exaucé (Comp Romains 8.26)

Le vrai commentaire de cette parole nous est donné par Jésus luimême : "Si vous demeurez en moi et que mes paroles demeurent en vous, demandez tout ce que vous voudrez et il vous sera fait."

Sin., B et quelques majuscules portent : Si vous me demandez quelque chose en mon nom. Cette leçon ne présente aucun sens acceptable.
