Jean 17.24

Jésus demande ainsi pour les siens la réalisation parfaite de cette gloire que déjà il a donnée à leur foi par sa parole. (verset 22) Père, répète-t-il avec l'émotion croissante de sa prière. Et cette prière sera exaucée, car elle concerne ceux que le Père lui a donnés, tous ses rachetés, (verset 20) et non pas seulement les premiers disciples, comme aux versets 9,11.

Ces mots si pleins d'amour pour les siens sont expressément placés en tête de la phrase comme motif à l'appui de sa prière. Et ici, le Fils de Dieu ne prie pas seulement il veut, d'une volonté qui est, comme toujours, en parfaite harmonie avec celle du Père, mais qui s'affirme ainsi d'une manière exceptionnelle, parce qu'en ce moment Jésus émet en quelque sorte une disposition testamentaire.

Sa "dernière volonté" est que là où il est (il parle au présent, par anticipation) eux aussi y soient avec lui.

Etre là où il est, avec lui, c'est le ciel pour ceux qui l'aiment.

Ce doux et glorieux privilège, Jésus venait de le leur promettre comme consolation suprême, (Jean 14.3) et maintenant il le demande à Dieu pour eux. Là ils contempleront sa gloire ; la contempler, c'est y avoir part. (Jean 17.22 ; 1Jean 3.2 ; Romains 8.17)

Ces derniers mots sont dans un rapport intime avec ceux-ci : la gloire que tu m'as donnée.

S'agit-il ici de la gloire du Fils de Dieu avant son incarnation, ou de cette gloire dans laquelle il allait rentrer après avoir accompli son œuvre ?

Les interprètes discutent cette question, les uns soutenant le premier sens, à cause de ce mot : tu m'as aimé avant la fondation du monde, les autres se déclarant pour la seconde signification, parce qu'il est évident que Jésus parle de la même gloire dont il vient de dire qu'il l'a donnée à ses disciples ; (verset 22) c'est elle qu'il désire leur faire contempler dans la perfection (verset 24) et dont il va reprendre possession. (Comparer Philippiens 2.9)

Mais, au fond, cette discussion nous paraît superflue ; il ne s'agit que d'une seule et même gloire considérée sous ces deux aspects, dans le passé et dans l'avenir. C'est exactement ainsi qu'au verset 5, le Sauveur redemande la possession de sa gloire, mais d'une gloire dont il jouissait "avant que le monde fût."

Seulement, dans notre verset, cette dernière pensée est exprimée d'une manière plus intime qui nous révèle l'amour comme le lien de l'unité éternelle du Père et du Fils. En effet, Jésus exprime dans ce mot : tu m'as aimé, en même temps qu'il manifeste un profond amour filial, la conscience qu'il a de sa préexistence éternelle en ajoutant : avant la fondation du monde.
