Les Juifs considéraient que la vie éternelle leur était révélée par les Écritures, et qu'ils la possédaient, parce qu'ils avaient la Parole de Dieu entre leurs mains.

Jésus les invite à fouiller les Écritures avec plus d'assiduité et d'attention : « vous sondez les Écritures parce que vous pensez avoir en elles la vie éternelle ». Le Juifs sondaient en effet les Écritures, mais uniquement pour se glorifier personnellement...

Il est possible de constater que certaines personnes ont une grande connaissance des Écritures, tout en étant cependant étrangères à la puissance de ces Dernières. On peut interpréter le message du Seigneur, « sondez les Écritures » sous la forme d'un appel : « vous déclarez recevoir et croire l'Écriture, qu'Elle en soit juge » ! Il est également commandé aux chrétiens, de sonder les Écritures : ils doivent non seulement les lire ou les entendre, mais ils doivent en plus les sonder, ce qui doit dénoter une certaine assiduité dans leur examen et leur étude.

Nous devons sonder les Écritures avec une certaine « perspective céleste », un but final : « parce que vous pensez avoir en elles la vie éternelle ». Nous devons sonder les Écritures pour Christ : Il est en effet le Chemin nouveau et vivant qui conduit à cette fin.

Au témoignage de Christ envers les Juifs, s’ajoutent des reproches pour leur incrédulité et leur méchanceté, ainsi que leur négligence, quant à la doctrine céleste. Il leur reproche également leur manque d'amour pour Dieu.

Seules les âmes contrites peuvent avoir la vie en Jésus-Christ. Nombreux sont ceux qui professent hautement leur piété et qui, cependant, manquent d'amour pour Dieu, et négligent la Personne de Christ, en méprisant Ses commandements. L'amour que nous éprouvons pour Dieu doit être vivant, actif en notre cœur : il sera alors accepté.

Les Juifs sous-estimèrent Christ, ils le tournèrent en dérision, s’admirant et se surestimant eux-mêmes. Comment de telles personnes peuvent-elles croire, quand elles acclament les hommes et en font leurs idoles ?

Alors que Christ et Ses disciples sont seuls dignes d’être suivis, comment les orgueilleux peuvent-ils croire, quand ils n’ont de plus grande ambition que d’étaler leur apparente bonne conduite ?
