A la nourriture qui périt et dont se contentaient ses auditeurs, Jésus oppose la nourriture qui devient la vie de l'âme dès que celle-ci la reçoit et qui subsiste en vie éternelle, c'est à dire, qui produit la vie éternelle et qui prolonge ses effets jusqu'au plein épanouissement de la vie dans l'éternité (Jean 4.14)

Ce que Jésus entend par cette nourriture, il va le dire de la manière la plus claire (versets 33-35)

Il se contente d'ajouter ici : le Fils de l'homme vous la donnera. (Sin., D, Itala ont : vous donne ; le futur est préférable.) Il était lui-même, comme Fils de l'homme (voir sur ce terme Matthieu 8.20, note), la manifestation de la vie divine dans notre humanité, et lui seul pouvait la donner.

Mais, pour l'obtenir, il faut travailler (grec opérer, acquérir par le travail), c'est-à-dire, se rendre apte à la recevoir en renonçant, par un effort sérieux de la volonté, aux erreurs et aux préjugés de l'homme naturel, pour venir à Celui qui seul donne la vie.

Grec :, l'a scellé, c'est-à-dire solennellement approuvé, accrédité comme son envoyé par les miracles qu'il lui donne d'accomplir et spécialement par celui dont ils viennent d'être témoins. (Comparer Jean 3.33 ; 5.36,37 ; 10.36, notes.)

Au nom de son Père, Jésus ajoute celui de Dieu, pour marquer qu'il tient son investiture de celui qui possède l'autorité suprême.
